We fought against adding a gimbal for a while, but the Ronin—with about a dozen upgrades and tweaks—finally won us over.
The biggest changes we've done to make it actually work in the field:
— Extended the arms so that you can put on even the longest of loads, all the way up to our Epic and Angenieux zoom.
— Added joysticks to control yaw, pitch and pan from the handles, not just from the included remote control.
— Added the CineMilled 'Post' adapter and dovetail block, which allows for mounting on everything from a jib to a steadicam vest.
— A vest! Yes, you will indeed look like either a 22nd century crane operator or a 20th century tech hobbyist, but this will change the ronin from a one-shot trick pony to a tool you can use for a whole day. Your arms (and shoulders, and back) will thank us.
If you're renting this with a camera package, feel free to come by before your rental to get some help learning how to tame the 3-axis beast. We'll include an hour of instruction, gratis.
If you think you need help more than that, we can do anything from a half-day instruction (think of it as an instructor/operator helping you get 100% prepped and comfortable) to a full-day operator who can help you get the shots you need with a professional attention to detail—for rates on a full-timer, send us an email.
And if you're looking for a way to tie it all together and be a true one-man-band, check out our Cinegears wireless follow focus
. We've made some minor changes to that as well to make the combo an easy-to-use, operator's dream. Just let us know!
