Sony PXW FS7 Camera
Digital Cinema Camera
$ 100.00 to $ 270.00
As the C300 has gotten rather old in the tooth, we started looking for something that could fill the void between the C300's all-day performance and all the features that have become must-haves in the last few years: 4k, multiple mounts and slomo.
Like the C300, the FS7 has easy timecode support, xlr inputs, built-in NDs and a do-all formfactor. Though it can be a bit fussy sometimes (looking at you, Sony menu engineers), the FS7 is a great all-rounder that can do everything from grueling doc/reality weeks to button-down studio work.
Sony Listened to everyone who said that the FS100 and the C100/300/500 can be kind of a pain to mount-up, prep and shoulder mount. Unfortunately, they only tested the camera on a 14 year old middle linebacker.
We took our time and tried to strike a balance between the stripped-down machine that came in the box and our 12 pound 'Cat on your shoulder' Aaton that we measure everything against. We added a proper V-Mount on the back so you don't have to carry a fannypack with 10 sony batteries. We also threw a cage and top plate on so that you're not gaffing your lav to your teradek to the wireless transmitter to your phone to a coffee cup.
If you're doing a day of running around town with an EF or PL zoom, the included 'Shoulder Kludge' (patent not pending) allows you to put the camera where it belongs: balanced perfectly on your shoulder bone, not falling off or digging into your clavicle. We also include a handgrip extender and an EVF extender so that you don't look like a 6 year old trying to claw into the mail slot of a candy store.
And being able to swap from E mount (which everyone one has lots of, right?) to EF or PL on the spot can make the difference between a ruined shoot ('we dropped the lens, we lost the afternoon') to just a run-of-the-mill hectic shoot ('we dropped the lens, I found a canon kit zoom in a trashcan on Canal that's stuck at 85, can everyone take 3 steps back').
There's a lot to love about this camera. S-Log. Clean high ISO. RAW output. And if you need help navigating the Sony Menu Labyrinth, we can talk you through it.
